General information

On December 19th, 2002 for the first time in the history of the company (bell Atlantic. nynex, NY telephone) Verizon laid off 2,400 union workers in the state of New York. Claiming external events beyond there control forced them to cut back on there work force.
They apparently are talking about cutting the workforce again by another 1300+!

PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION
Verizon fears the customers who "go psc" on them, because they are fined by the PSC when they don't meet certain standards of service and quality. If you have encountered numerous problems with the communications giant, and failed to resolve your issues, or are constantly given the run around contacting the PSC will most likely get your problem resolved quickly. Before I was laid off customers who called the PSC received extra attention and a slightly better quality of service and response time.
FASTER SERVICE FOR MEDICAL REASONS
If you have a medical need for Verizon to place you as a priority when getting your phone installed or repaired, make sure to let them know that you have a medical emergency and require a faster response time. You may be required to provide medical documentation, but before my layoff medical emergencies generally received faster service.
QUALITY OF SERVICE
Perhaps you are concerned about the level and quality of service that you will receive if you change your existing service from Verizon to another local carrier. Rest assured that Verizon is REQUIRED BY LAW to provide the same quality and standards to its "wholesale" customers as it provides to its own customers.
(a "wholesale" customer is one who has a different provider other then Verizon, where Verizon still owns the phone lines but leases it to your local provider of choice who resells the service to you)

BROADBAND INTERNET
(DSL/CABLE)
*update* for more information, and to see what I have been doing to try to get Verizon to comply with the laws visit my news page by clicking here
First off, I recommend that if your local cable provider offers cable modems in your area that you look into getting broadband thru them. Cable modems are much faster and cost around the same monthly fee as DSL does. If you decide to go with DSL you will see, as I did, the ILLEGAL practice that Verizon does! In order to get DSL on your phone line YOU MUST have Verizon as your local telephone provider. This forces you to not have a choice of local providers, although your dial tone will still be connected to the same cable out on the pole, and the same equipment in the central office, Verizon will not allow you to get DSL thru them or any other DSL provider. Go ahead, ask covad, earthlink high speed, or any other DSL provider. This in fact is not providing equal levels of service to Verizon and Wholesale customers. I suggest you attempt getting DSL with out Verizon as your local provider, and if they deny you because you are not a Verizon customer, contact the PSC and file a complaint. Enough complaints, and fees and they will have no choice but to obey the laws. This will mean Verizon will have to let anyone have DSL, or no one can have it.(which now adays if they went this way the cable companies would be extremely happy to have your business)

INSIDE TELEPHONE WIRING AND
INSIDE WIRE maintenance PLANS
Unknown to many people, You OWN and are responsible for any inside wiring beyond the demarc. In many cases outside of NYC this point is outside of your home. Within most of the boros of NY this is the first jack that enters your house, it is easily identifiable by the flip up cover over the cord connection. If this is the only connection that you have YOU DO NOT NEED AN INSIDE WIRE MATINENCE PLAN, any work any work preformed upto and including this point is regulated and is the responsibility of Verizon to ensure it is properly functioning. If you would like additional jacks you may do the work yourself, or hire whomever you choose to do this work for you. Should you decide to hire someone besides your local telephone provider to do the inside wire and jacks for you, you will save an extrodanary amount of money, and as long as the work they performed meets certain standards it will be covered by your inside wire maintenance plan should it become defective in the future.

WHY LAYOFF THEN GO ON AN ADVERTISING BONANZA?
Now that the company is saving on over 2400 salaries, as a matter of fact, even before the layoffs took place, Verizon began a very strong advertisement campaign. They can afford to advertise a lot more now that 2400 people in NY alone are wondering how they are going to afford to pay there bills. CWA had a 1 million advertising budget, or so they said, there ads only ran on AM radio, and they had several slots on broadcast the week before the actual layoffs took place. When these layoffs happened where was the media coverage? When the talks about the layoffs were going on, where was the media coverage? That's the advertising dollars working for the company. I am sure they made sure, by sending so much advertising revenue to these television and radio broadcast companies, that it wouldn't be in those companies to bad mouth the telecom giant, and risk losing all of those advertising dollars that Verizon was so generously throwing at them.

ARBRITRATIONS?
*new info on the right side of this page up top*
*update* please visit my page of action being taken to see the union and company responces to my questions regarding this topic by clicking here
What arbratrations? According to the company, the arbratrations are ongoing, and that is all that they will say. According to the union, they continually say that they believe that we are going to all get our jobs back, but the company keeps delaying the court dates. Sources of mine that still work for the company under this so called union did little or nothing the day that 2400 brothers of this union were laid off, and now they want those still working to forget about us, as it never happened. Meanwhile many who still work are working under strenuous conditions, in worsening conditions, because the company refuses to spend any money to improve the conditions of the outside telephone equipment (poles, cables, etc.) They are being hit with unfair suspensions and disciplinary actions. And they are told to forget about us as it never happened! Well it did, and it can and probably will happen to more. People who had the time in to retire and didn't receive no respect or sympathy from me, if they are disciplined, or fired and lose there pensions no sweat off my back, they should have stepped aside and allowed for others to keep there jobs, and when I see you my middle finger goes up. I feel that those "old timers" disrespected the union and its members by not retiring, or taking one of the many buyouts that the company offered.
